Not only in the “right way”.

Ensuring you’re treating someone with dignity, easy right?

Not so much.

Simple maybe, easy no. Simple because it just requires active listening, treating without judgement, blame, toxic shame, or criticism.

Everyone is nodding along, yeah! I never do that.

If you’re saying that then it’s almost a guarantee that you treat people in those ways:

She who knows that she does not know is best off.

He who pretends to know but doesn’t is ill.

Only someone who realises he is ill can become whole.

The sage is not ill because she recognises

this illness as illness,

Therefore she is…

Connection in a world that fosters disconnection.

Our world is chaotic at the moment. The antidote to this is to connect more deeply with your Self. To know yourself deeper, and to embody your feelings fully.

You won’t get rid of the chaos; it’s the nature of life as much as peace and tranquillity. What you can do is to build a tolerance to disorder; a space to respond; an emotional process that includes and celebrates chaos as part of the experience.

Here are six ways you can find connection in a world that often fosters disconnection:

No matter what you do in life there is always…

Do it with care.

In a recent Creative Block Beaters community call, we discussed the widely experienced, widely ignored phenomena of performance anxiety.

The gig culture of music is now expanding across much of Western Society. Performance anxiety is likely expanding across an insecure and highly competitive work environment where we’re probably holding ourselves to perfectionistic standards.

Ignored because the standard narratives of performance include an acceptance of stress and fear. The audience often expects perfection. Some may suggest that excellent performance cannot exist without some stress, pain and fear. There’s an expectation on performers to bear the brunt of the creative endeavour. …

A rich history of symbolism.

The magpie has a rich history of symbolism in Northern Europe, China, and North America.

They’re risk-takers; fast, bold. They love treasure and became known for waiting in streams by silver and gold. Going to get what they want, then exiting quickly.

The native Americans attributed the trickster to the magpie, an opportunist.

The Chinese believe it’s an omen of good luck, good fortune, and brings blessings of abundance.

Spotting a magpie can be a sign of change. A sign that a long-lost love is trying to find you.

It has its lineage in the crow family. Crows have significance…

The grooves to be aware of in trauma survival

Often, surviving adverse childhood experiences (ACE) can engrain certain behaviours in your subconscious beliefs.

This article will explore those, alongside the challenges that might bring to having self-confidence in a fast-paced and chaotic world.

Many experiential grooves are cut in the brain and body from ACE, to keep you safe. That’s great, because if you’ve been through those experiences, and you’re here reading this, then it worked. You’re safe, and you made it to adulthood.

Many people want to go back in history and change the past, without full awareness and compassion for how vulnerable and helpless a child can…

This awareness will help you to develop.

The difference between reactive and creative mindsets is enormous. Creative behaviour will have significantly different outcomes in any given situation.

Not that you have a choice per se, you are reactive until you have the awareness to be creative. The intention is to build that awareness. Welcome the reactive behaviour in an open and curious manner, then cultivate the space to choose differently.

Reactivity is not living a life of self-leadership. It’s moving through life in one chaotic or rigid situation after another. …

Into the chrysalis, to become the goo.

I am writing this on January seventh 2021. Yesterday’s scenes in Washington sent a shock wave through the whole of the world. The media labelled them a mob, protestors. They didn’t use the word terrorist maybe because they were white-skinned.

It wasn’t a peaceful protest. It was full of revolutionary anger. The protestors broke into the seat of American democracy and defiled it with their jests, selfies and lack of respect for the institution — a disregard for the sacred space.

The dark night of the American soul.

The best metaphor for the dark night I’ve ever come across is…

A personal story of growth

Elegance is a feeling, a state of the body. Straight back, shoulders slightly back, head held high and a strong core.

It took me a long time to become embodied in elegance. My go-to position was slumped forward, shoulders hunched over. A position of internalized shame, doubt, not being able to find confidence in myself.

I always had a sense of wanting to be smaller than my frame. People expressed their surprise when I straightened once in a while: “Oh, you’re tall!”

I am tall. 6' 2". A broad frame. I could never own this…

What did the toughest year in recent history teach me?

The Chinese character for crisis contains two aspects: danger and opportunity.

As I closed out the year of 2020, I was relieved. Who wasn’t! I was also reflective of the year and all that it taught me. I’m not in the camp of false hope that 2021 will be any different or better. I know that we will evolve as a collective through these troubled times. I’m not naive that some of that will bring its challenge to the human community.

I see this cycle of change lasting as long…

We shame it into a problem.

Anger is a tricky conversation. It’s an emotion. It has value. Yet, we’re rightly afraid of it, for the death and destruction that has dominated human history.

The recent world wars that are only just fading into history beyond memory — leaders consumed with personal legacy and vendetta. We must not live in fantasy to this truth, or it will happen again. A personal slight consumed Hitler from the time he was a homeless artist. He developed a lot of his hatred of the Jewish in this time. They were in positions of power in money in Europe at that…
